Uncommon words in food indutry

Groak

Groak is an old Scottish term meaning to silently and longingly watch someone eat, hoping they will share their food.

It is often used to describe pets or children staring at a plate, waiting for a bite — but it can apply to anyone gazing hungrily at someone else’s meal.

La de la vergüenza

A Spanish phrase meaning “the one of shame.”

It refers to the last piece of food on a shared plate — the piece no one dares to take because it feels impolite.

Almost everyone notices it.

Few are brave enough to reach for it.

Oomancy

Oomancy is the ancient practice of divination using eggs.

Dating back to Ancient Greece and Rome, it involves cracking a fresh raw egg into warm water and interpreting the shapes formed by the egg white.

The glass used is sometimes called the “Venus glass.”

The word comes from the Greek oon (egg) and manteia (divination).
